I commit to internally document the procedure for reporting bullying and/or harassment
This page collects real-world examples from labs around the world. We encourage all labs implementing the SAFE Labs Handbook to share their own commitments/statements here.
Germany
OttLab_2025: Lab members are encouraged to report any bullying, harassment or discriminatory behavior without fear of retaliation to the PI, to confidential parties for conflict mediation and consultation, or contact the ‘Personalrat’ (employee representatives). For academic misconduct allegations, report to your PI or contact HU’s Ombudspersonen.
Steps for raising lab or inter-personal issues
- If comfortable doing so, request a meeting to raise the issue with the PI. The PI commits to treat such meetings confidential and without personal consequences for the person raising any issue.
- If this is not possible, please raise the issue by consulting HGS Conflict Consultation here.
- If none of the above steps fare appropriate, raise the issue with the ‘Personalrat’ (employee representatives).

ReinhardLab_2025: Under no circumstances do we support any form of bullying or harassment, whether verbal or physical. SISSA has multiple measures in place to report bullying and harassment, and to receive psychological support as well as help with possible actions and consequences. The following four routes can be taken if someone experiences bullying and harassment:
- Talk to the PI and/or the PhD coordinator: For less severe cases or if one wants to first have an informal chat about incidences, the PI as well as the PhD coordinator can be contacted.
- The CUG representative: The CUG (Comitato Unico di Garanzia – Committee for equal opportunities) representative is the official contact person to report bullying and harassment.
- Talk to the ombuds person: The ombuds person, like the PI, do not have legal knowledge and are not entitled to take any actions, but they are an independent and confidential resource with more extensive knowledge of possible actions and consequences.
- School psychologist: The services of the school psychologist can be used free of charge. Beyond a psychological degree, they also have legal knowledge and can help you decide on the next steps.
Contact details can be found in our extended version of the Lab Handbook.
DonaLab_2025: Maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment is a shared responsibility.
All forms of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and mobbing are strictly prohibited.Report the Incident to the Appropriate Authority. You may report the incident through one or more of the following official channels:
a) Direct Supervisor or Group Leader — Inform your PI or direct supervisor, unless they are directly involved in the situation. They are responsible for ensuring respectful workplace behavior and escalating the issue if needed.
b) CNR’s Comitato Unico di Garanzia (CUG) — The CUG handles issues of workplace discrimination, bullying (mobbing), and harassment. You can submit a report via their website: https://cug.cnr.it. Reports can be anonymous or named, and are treated confidentially.
c) Commissione per l’Etica e l’Integrità nella Ricerca — For cases affecting research conduct or involving scientific collaborators. Contact: cnr.ethics@cnr.it. Review the ”Linee guida per l’integrità nella ricerca” for guidance on ethical violations.

UraiLab_2026: Bullying, harassment and misconduct are unacceptable. If you witness or are subjected to anything that may fit their description, then tell someone who can do something.
The following four routes can be taken if someone experiences bullying and harassment:
- Talk to your PI and/or lab members: for less severe cases or if one wants to first have an informal chat about incidences, please bring up issues and questions with the lab. Often, an open and honest conversation early on can clarify much more than waiting until things get worse.
- If you’d rather talk with someone outside the lab, contact the Unit chair (Guido Band) or the unit’s PhD/postdoc representative.
- For PhD students, the FSW graduate school has mentors and people you can connect with.
- At the level of the faculty and university, there are many resources: confidential counselors, ombuds officers, and formal procedures.

SuperLab_2026: Bullying and harassment are entirely unacceptable behavior in any work environment. Please be familiar with the University of Liverpool Bullying and Harassment Policy, including steps staff and students can take if they wish to formally or informally report, or receive confidential advice about, any concerning behavior that they have witnessed or been subjected to.
For both UoL staff and students, the Report & Support online form can be used as a first port of call, to raise an issue and access support.
CoenLab_2025: Harassment is unwanted behaviour which you find offensive or which makes you feel intimidated or humiliated on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Bullying and harassment are unacceptable. If you witness or are subjected to anything that may fit their description, then tell someone who can do something.

AeryJonesLab_2026: If you ever have a concern about inadequate animal care, lax bench safety, inequity or exclusion, bullying, harassment, scientific misconduct, unprofessional behavior, or anything else that makes you feel uncomfortable, please share it with me so I can take action. You are also welcome to report it to the UMB Hotline. I do not tolerate such behavior, and I take my role as an enforcer of our lab’s culture very seriously. Actions that make one person feel unsafe, excluded, or uncomfortable affect all of us.
MsEELab_2026: Students who feel they have experienced or witnessed bias, discrimination, bullying, hazing, harassment, or sexual misconduct by another student may make a formal report to Cornell through a variety of mechanisms outlined on the Student and Campus Life Website, which links to the Cornell Office of Civil Rights/Title IX and Sexual Misconduct. The latter website also has links to resources for filing reports with both Cornell and law enforcement for all members of the Cornell community. This process may also be initiated through Pablo as the group leader.
